Annual Girl's Trip
Come join us for our 5th Annual Girls Trip.  This year we are headed back to one of our favorites, Cozumel!  We will be staying at the Occidental Grand, an all-inclusive luxury resort located on a private section of Cozumel's finest beach, Playa San Francisco.  With 5-10 minute boat rides to the island's best dive sites, it will leave us plenty of time to lounge on the beach, drink margaritas, relax, and slip in a little jewelry shopping.

Make new friends or bring some with you.  We'd love to have you join us!  Come on, you deserve it!  Check out all the trip details.

Must book by Feb. 1!

Reef Fish and Creature Identification
Pygmy SeahorseHave you ever surfaced from a dive and asked your buddy "What kind of fish was that black and orange one you pointed out?".  Or been asked if you saw the toad fish, when you have no idea what a toad fish looks like?  Then this is your opportunity to learn a bit more about the fish and creatures we visit on every dive.

Designed to expand your knowledge of the fish and creatures you may see throughout the Caribbean and Pacific, this night of photographs and stories will get you prepped for your next dive adventure!  This is not a certification class, but the information can be applied towards the Fish ID Specialty.

Conservation Corner - Wananavu Kadavu

Wananavu Kadavu
Kadavu, a small island south of the main island of Viti Levu in Fiji, is a place we have become very familiar with over the years.  This friendly area has hosted groups from Underwater Phantaseas on three separate occasions.  Every person that returns shares stories of the wonderful people of Fiji, the incredible hospitality and bright smiles of the Fijians.  But the people in Kadavu have a very serious problem - a lack of clean drinking water.

Wananavu Kadavu is a charitable fundraising mission to help bring clean water to the island of Kadavu, Fiji.  Basically, most villages in Kadavu do not have direct access to the clean spring water that is higher up in the mountains. So every day someone from the village has to hike up to the mountain lakes, fetch a pale of water and carry it back down. Wananavu Kadavu, which means "Taking Care of Kadavu", is working on creating basins and installing a pipe system to get running water down to the villages.

Wananavu Kadavu has a specific amount needed to complete their project.  As of this writing, they only need about $2500 to reach their goal and install this much needed water delivery system.

Equipment Tip of the month
Service Center
We have had a lot of people booking trips all over the world to escape the winter cold, which got me thinking about a piece of equipment I take on every dive - my flashlight.  This simple device brings out so much, from the lobsters and eels tucked in their holes, to the obvious need during a night dive.  Regardless, I always have one with me.

After seeing numerous flooded and mistreated lights, I wanted to pass along some bits of advice on the care and maintenance of these essentials tools.

The biggest report we get is people returning from trips saying their light flooded, and it's brand new.  Most never think to look at the o-ring, let alone take it out and clean it prior to its' maiden voyage.  Prior to your next trip, take your batteries out of the flashlight, loosen the cap or cover, and if possible, remove the o-ring and put it somewhere clean and safe (I like to put mine inside the light, where the batteries normally reside).  Once to your destination, install the batteries, clean the oring and groove on the light, apply a light amount of silicone grease (it should shine) and reinstall the cap.  Test your o-ring by putting your light in the rinse bucket for a few minutes.  Once your dive is complete, rinse your light in fresh water.  If you need to change the batteries, repeat that entire sequence (most just unscrew the cap and replace the batteries, failing to take care of that critical o-ring each time).

What to do with those old batteries?  Bring them home and use them in a low voltage device, like a TV remote or wireless mouse.  Most used batteries will power these items for several months.  Or recycle them at any number of retailers, including Batteries Plus or Home Depot.
